CHAFFEE -- New Madrid County's Sr. Babe Ruth team kicked off their season Tuesday afternoon with a win, combining for seven hits as they took down host Chaffee 6-1.

"For it to be our first game I thought we came out a little flat hitting the ball," NMC's coach Kevin Lyons said. "As the game progressed a little bit we had one inning that we kind of strung a few hits together and we held on to it."

After holding a slim 2-1 lead going in to the fifth inning, New Madrid would put up their biggest offense outburst in the frame while giving themselves a little breathing room.

Eric Holloway would lead off the inning taking starting pitcher Daniel Dooley's offering to deep center for a solo home run.

Later in the frame with one out, Brandon Bennett hit a drive to the second base side, scoring Chris Pavy from second who reached getting hit by a pitcher before stealing second.

Next to bat, after Bennett reached third on two passed balls, Ross Carter hit a shot just left of center field that rolled to the fence, scoring Bennett and leaving Carter with a triple.

Hunter Ivie would wrap up the rally hitting a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Carter to make it a 6-1 ball game.

Chaffee's lone run would come in the second when, after Jason Cicardi walked to reach to first, he advanced all the way around the base paths on passed balls.

"Were kind of struggling right now," Red Devil's coach Joe Bickings said. "Our moral is probably down after that (Charleston) wood bat tournament where we didn't hit the ball.

"Now we're back to metal and I was hoping we would turn things around, but looks like it's not happening that way. Hopefully this next game we'll do something."

Though they collected six walks on the afternoon, Chaffee's offense was only able to produce two hits, off the bats of Andrew Dooley and Daniel Dooley.

Going 4 1/3 innings Daniel Dooley takes the loss. He allowed six runs on six hits while striking out six.

"Towards the end when when he gave up those runs he was just leaving the ball up and he might have been a little fatigued," Bickings said. "Other than that he pitched pretty well we just didn't get any hits behind him."

For New Madrid County six players contributed a hit on the game with Bennett leading the team with two.

Mason Kellams picks up the win. He came in in the second to pitch 5 2/3 of scoreless baseball allowing two hits while walking two and striking out two.

"He's a young player, first year in to the league," Lyons said. "Hated to bring him in to the situation he got brought in to.

"We were wanting to bring him in a little slow, but he's going to be a good one."

The Red Devils got a little revenge in a second contest Tuesday evening. Alex Crowe pitched Chaffee to a 10-3 victory over New Madrid County with Pavy taking the loss.
