CAPE GIRARDEAU -- The Cherokees 18-and-under team broke away from a 3-3 tie in the top of the fourth inning in a big way.

A combination of three hits and four walks put the opposing Southside Columbia squad against the ropes as the Cherokees went to work producing seven runs and eventually a 14-3, five-inning win in the SEMO Invitational tournament's pool play at Notre Dame Regional High School.

Notre Dame's Mark Hagedorn delivered the first of many big fly's for the Cherokees to start things off. In the top of the first inning, following an RBI single from Jordan Chamness, Hagedorn hit a deep 2-run home run over the left field fence giving the Cherokees a 3-0 lead.

However, it didn't take long for Southside to bring it to another tie. Southside's Landon Clapp, following back-to-back doubles to start the bottom of the first, answered with a 2-run blast himself tying it at three runs apiece.

That was all Southside would get with Notre Dame's Colton Young pitching for the Cherokees.

Young allowed four hits in the first inning and a single to the first batter of the second inning. Following the lead-off single in the second, Young sat down the remaining batters in order on eight strikeouts. He sat down a total of nine in his five innings on the mound.

The rest of the Cherokees ensured Young the victory with their seven-run outpour in the fourth inning. Chamness started things off with a single which was followed by three consecutive walks, a hit batter and then a bases-clearing double by Wesley Glaus down the left field line. A double by Cody Livesay made it 10-3 after the fourth.

The Cherokees put four more runs on the board in the fifth inning. Their second home run of the day by Shawn Crump was a three-run shot while a double by Charleston's James Naile added the last of the 14 runs.

Chamness led the Cherokees with a 3-for-3 day including two singles and a double. Glaus went 2-for-3 with two doubles.
