CHAFFEE -- Pitching and defense were the keys to Chaffee's 2-1, walk-off win over the Cape Girardeau Post 63 Junior Legion squad on Thursday evening in the first game of their doubleheader.

Chaffee's Alex Davie pitched all seven innings while giving up four hits and letting his defense do their job behind him.

"He threw well," Chaffee coach Joe Bickings said about Davie. "He threw for strikes but, it looked like he struggled a bit with his curveball. Defense wins the games and he was throwing strikes and they were putting it in play and we made the plays when we had to."

Davie worked out of a first inning, bases-loaded situation with a strikeout. He was later tagged with an unearned run in the fifth inning that tied the game at 1-1, when a dropped ball in center field led to a Logan Henson run.

In the bottom of the seventh inning and with two outs, Alex Crowe delivered with a walk-off double that scored Nathan Cicardi from second sealing the win for Chaffee.

"Our kids battled," said Bickings. "It came down to defense and pitching and we executed and that's what got us the win.

"We always tell them that their glove is going to save more runs than you knock in. That's what happened today."

Chaffee's first run was scored in the bottom of the fourth inning. Andrew Terhune was walked on four straight pitches and then advanced to second base on a balk. Two batters later, Andrew Dooley hit a liner over the infield on the right side. Trying to extend his base hit into a double, Dooley was cut down at second base to end the inning but, Terhune crossed the plate in time to record the run.

Cody Payne led Chaffee with two hits, both singles. Crowe's game-winning double was the only extra-base hit of the contest.

Justin Landewee was handed the loss after pitching the final inning. Justin Modglin Cape with two singles.

Chaffee also won the second game of the doubleheader by the same score of 2-1. Andrew Dooley was the winner on the hill for Chaffee while Daniel Dooley picked up the save. Adam Pennington was given the loss for Post 63.
