SIKESTON -- Among the 482 contestants in this year's Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo will be some of the best contestants in their respective events.

Rodeo Chairman Justin Wibbenmeyer partly credits the timing of the event with bringing in so much top talent.

"We're on the Silver Tour so these cowboys and cowgirls are competing for the million dollar Justin Boots finals in Omaha next month," he said.

"You'll see everybody. Used to, people would turn out if there was a high bull riding or something, but they will all show right on up now."

Wibbenmeyer said some of the bigger names you can expect to see include 11-time World Champion Barrel Racer Charmayne James, Billy Etbauer, who won last year's saddle bronc event, and Spud Duvall who currently ranks 34th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) steer wrestling standings.

Also returning is last year's Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo All-Around Cowboy Trevor Brazil, who ranks No. 1 this year in the PRCA All-Around standings.

No stranger to the Sikeston rodeo scene, steer wrestler Glen Clark said this is one of the more enjoyable rodeos he visits each year.

"I always like to come to Sikeston because I like the arena and the way it's set up," he said. "The people are friendly and it's just one of the better tour rodeos out there."

Drawing slack, Clark put in both his go-rounds on Tuesday evening, scoring a time of 4.0 second in his first run and a miss in his second.

"I thought I made a good run," Clark said of his first go-round. "I had the same steer that I had at Dodge City on my second one.

"Ended up making the short go on the steer. So I kind of knew him and that kind of helps."

Notable in Tuesday's two slack events include Dane Hanna with the top combines time in steer wrestling of 7.8 seconds. Sikeston native Carrie Thompson put in a time of 16.51 in barrel racing to trail event leader Angie Meadors by 0.27 seconds.
