JACKSON -- The Sikeston Bulldogs soccer team got their season started in grand fashion on Monday evening as they posted their first-ever win over the Saxony Lutheran Crusaders with a 1-0 victory at Saxony Lutheran High School.
"It's good to get that first win under your belt," newly appointed Sikeston head coach Doyle Noe, who also received his first win as head coach, said. "You don't really know what to expect in the first game of the season but it was really a team effort."
Sikeston's Evan Underwood scored the games first goal in the 60th minute with an assist from Josh Bill. Sikeston out-shot the Crusaders 12-5 as the Bulldog defense held strong.
"We controlled things for most of the game," said Noe. "Hunter Williams controlled the defense in the middle for us and did a great job. Josh Bill also had a great game for us.
"We competed well."
Sikeston (1-0) will be at Farmington tonight to take part in the Farmington Invitational tournament.
Junior Varsity
The Sikeston junior varsity squad also won on Monday with a 3-0 defeat of Saxony.
Brandon Goodwin, Quentin Hyde and Zach Shaw all recorded goals for the Bulldogs.

Sikeston 30, Cape Central 24
SIKESTON -- The Sikeston junior varsity football team held off the visiting Cape Central Tigers 30-24 on Monday night in their first game of the season.
"It was a good win for us," Sikeston coach Alan Scheeter said. "It was a pretty exciting game to watch. There were a lot of mistakes and penalties that we need to correct but, we got a lot of valuable playing time for a lot of kids."
The Bulldogs lit the scoreboard up first with a 50-yard touchdown pass from David Foster to Traveon Dennis to go up 6-0 after the extra point attempt failed.
Three touchdowns were scored in the second quarter as Sikeston (1-0) built a 14-0 advantage after a 6-yard run by Chris Word. On the ensuing kickoff, however, Cape Central brought it all the way back for their first score on a 95-yard return. The Tigers closed the first half with a 3-yard run and a 2-point conversion to take a 16-14 lead.
After a scoreless third quarter, Sikeston was given a gift by the Tigers as a snap flew over the head of Cape Central's quarterback and out of the end zone for a safety. With 3:35 left in the game Word scored his second rushing touchdown of the game from six yards out. Darian Boyd sealed the win with a 35-yard touchdown run with 1:06 left.
Cape then drove the field in less than a minute and stuck in a 10-yard pass to make it the final of 30-24.
