CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Outscoring Saxony Lutheran and Delta a combined 33-1 Thursday afternoon in the pool round of the Notre Dame Softballfest, the Kelly Lady Hawks will enter Saturday as the top-seed out of their pool.
"I thought we played real aggressive, especially when we needed a hit," Kelly head coach Melanie Heuring said of her team's performance Thursday. "We got our hits and when we needed those extra bags the girls were aggressive on the base paths. That's what it took tonight."
Scoring four runs in the first inning and nine in the second, the Lady Hawks made sure their contest with the Lady Crusaders was never in question.
With Kelly pitching holding Saxony Lutheran scoreless through all four frames of play, the offense would add another six runs in the final two innings to end the game on the 15-run, mercy rule.
Drawing 13 walks in the game, the Lady Hawks also combined for nine hits with Kristen Powell and Jessica Worth leading the team with two hits apiece.
Though Kelly's second game ended up lop-sided by the end, the early innings had the showings of a much closer contest.
In what turned out to be a six inning contest, Delta was still within striking distance going in to the fifth, trailing 3-1.
After allowing only five hits through the first four innings, however, the Lady Bobcats surrendered four hits in the fifth frame as the Lady Hawks added four insurance runs to push the score to 7-1.
Kelly added another seven runs on six hits in the sixth frame while retiring the side in Delta's half of the inning to make up the final.
"We hit really well and the defense backed me up the whole game with a few exceptions," Kelly's starting pitcher Powell said. "Offensively we did what we had to do. We scored our runs and executed."
Going 3-for-3 Sydney Vinyard led Kelly in a game where the Lady Hawks came away with 15 hits.
Powell pitched all but one inning on the afternoon for the Lady Hawks, earning the wins in both contests while allowing one run and four hits.
Kaitlin Glastetter pitched the lone inning Powell wasn't on the mound. She allowed one hit and a walk while pitching a scoreless fourth to close out Kelly's win over Saxony Lutheran.
"We're having minimum walks per game, they're keeping their pitches to a minimum and they're getting a head in the count a lot," Heuring said of her pitchers. "You can't ask for anything more than that."
With their opponent to be determined at press time, Kelly will now play on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Notre Dame high school in the next round of the tournament.
