CHAFFEE -- Coming off a 16-1 win over Greenville the day prior, the Lady Devils broke out for 11 runs in the third inning alone Tuesday afternoon, defeating visiting East Prairie 17-3 after five innings on the mercy rule.

"Those (33) runs are almost even with what we put up the rest of the season," Chaffee's Hannah Bedwell said. "It's a good way to get into districts and get us in the (swing) of things."

Nearly batting around the order twice in the third, Chaffee was able to break what was then a 3-3 tie using five walks and four hits to help build a comfortable lead.

Of the Lady Devil's 11 runs in the frame, eight came two outs on the board with starting pitcher Montana Estes capping the rally on a double to left field scoring the final two runs of the frame.

Securing the win, relief pitchers Taylor Fodge and Hailey Enderle went on to pitch back-to-back scoreless innings while Chaffee's bats added three more runs in the fourth to make up the final.

"We started going (into a slump earlier) in the season," Estes said. "But then we got it together and we've been winning lately."

Combining for 10 hits, the Lady Devils offense was led by Kaitlyn Miller, Bedwell, and Estes as all three came away with two hits apiece.

Estes also picks up the win, allowing three runs in three innings on five hits and two walks while striking out three.

With its regular season over, Chaffee (7-14) will hope to keep its offense hot as it gets set to open the Class 1, District 1, tournament play today in Oran

The Lady Devils will face Van Buren at 4 p.m. in the first round and, with a win, would face host Oran the following day.

Chaffee will enter today's matchup with a leg up on Van Buren, having won the regular season match up 10-1.

"We played against them before," Bedwell said. "We were dead that game. We could have came out and put it right on them, but we didn't.

"So hopefully tomorrow we can get out and finish in three innings, get home and get ready to play Oran the next day."
