Soldier returns

Specialist Justin Mercer of Bertrand stands with his wife, Jessica, and son, Payton, in the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport on Tuesday. Mercer returned from an eight-month deployment in Afghanistan, during which he received a head injury, for which he is expected to receive a Purple Heart. More information on Mercer's service and injury will be in a future edition of the Standard Democrat.
