Road maintenance training offers hands-on instruction

BENTON -- There is a science behind smooth roads.

Twenty participants took part in the Missouri Local Technical Assistance Program's training on gravel road maintenance. The session included both classroom instruction and hands-on training with motor graders for highway department workers.

The first Missouri LTAP training hosted by Scott County, it drew participants from Malden, New Madrid County, St. Francois County as well as Scott County, according to Norman Brant, Highway Department supervisor.

The training offered a variety of information from how to determine the proper grade to keep a crown on the road to the right type of material for a gravel road base. Instructor Lennie Collins spoke with participants about the different ways to grade roads as well as working on ditches and the road shoulders.
