Ditch work progressing; more funding could be on its way

Friday, November 5, 2010

CHARLESTON -- The latest ditch cleanout in Mississippi County funded by the Natural Resources Conservation Service's Emergency Watershed Protection Program is progressing well and things look good for a new one.

Commissioner Steve Jones updated his fellow commissioners on the program in Mississippi County during the regular County Commission meeting Thursday.

The current EWP project includes excavation, tree removal and mowing by Schlosser Construction of Benton on almost 11 miles of the Maple Slough drainage ditch.

"Schlosser is 50 percent complete," Jones said, although he added that the contractor is ahead on the mowing required for the project.

Jones said Mark Nussbaum, area engineer for the NRCS, advised him things look favorable for the county getting EWP funding for yet another project: a cleanout of Ditch 23 and three of its laterals.
