CHARLESTON -- Funding for another ditch cleanout project in Mississippi County has been approved.
Commissioner Steve Jones said during the regular County Commission meeting Wednesday that Mark Nussbaum, area engineer for the Natural Resources Conservation Service, confirmed the Emergency Watershed Protection Program funding Monday.
"We did get the approval of the EWP money to clean out Ditch 23 and its three laterals," Jones said. "It's all a done deal. ... The money is already put aside."
Jones said paperwork for the project funding is on its way to J.R. Flores, state conservationist at the NRCS office in Columbia, for signatures.
Bid packets for contractors wanting to bid on the project should be available "probably before the end of the month," he said.
Presiding Commission Jim Blumenberg said excavation contractors are looking for work right now. "There's going to be some good bids on it," he predicted.
The Ditch 23 project will include over 10 linear miles of excavation, commissioners estimated.
