Scott Central will be inexperienced but hard working

SIKESTON -- The Scott County Central Bravettes will face an obstacle that can only be overcome, simply put, by playing games.

Scott Central contains a host of inexperienced young players for the 2010-11 season which could go either of two ways. It just depends on how they take the challenge that's ahead of them.

"The biggest thing concerns me on where we're going to be this year is, are we going to take the challenge," Scott Central head coach Semona Penrod said. "They're pretty good kids, they work really hard and I'm hoping they stay in there because it's going to be a tough year for them because they're so young."

Sophomores Daisy Gillespie and Kathy Brown are the only returning players for the Bravettes after extensive playing time last year as freshman. Gillespie, a 5-3 guard, proved to be a valued compliment to the Bravettes leading scorer last year in Markita Mosley, but will be relied on this season as more of a go-to player.

Seven freshman blanket the remaining roster with Shelly Pritchett, Kayla Guzman, Abby Ross, Makaela Blissett, Starr Lawless, Johniqua Fort and Derien Ditto. Pritchett and Blissett give the Bravettes a bit of height at 5-10 and 5-7, repectively, to a somewhat smaller roster.

"We're not real big," Penrod said. "We're going to be kind of weak, physically, because we're so much younger than everybody else."

The incoming freshman, however, have some experience in fielding a winning program. In junior high, Penrod's seven freshman won their junior high championship on top of having good seasons in both seventh and eighth grade.

"As far as work habits, they'll be right in there with the other teams they play," said Penrod. "But there's a lot of youth and there's a lot that's lacking. Hopefully, some of their hard work and determination will make up for it."

The Bravettes will open their season with a trip to Perryville on Nov. 29.

"We're going to jump right out there and play Perryville first. It's been a long time since we've played Perryville but what I can remember they usually have some pretty big kids.

"I'm really anxious to get started. I want to see what they're going to do."
