East Prairie returns plenty of experience

Wednesday, November 24, 2010

EAST PRAIRIE -- Returning most of what was a young team last year, the East Prairie Eagles are hoping the extra year under their belts with lead to at least a few extra wins this season.

Of the five returners that saw some varsity action in last year's 7-15 campaign, four were sophomores with the lone exception being star current senior Connor Scott.

Averaging 18.2 points and 10 rebounds per game, the 6-5 Scott earned first team all-conference and all-districts honors while being chosen second team all-region.

Joining Scott will be holdovers from last season's squad such as Dalton Golightly and Andrew Cartwright as well as newcomers that include Aaron Miller and Alan Miller.

After his team finished last season with a 88-60 loss to Caruthersville in the first round of the Class 3, District 1 Tournament, second year head coach Casey Knight likes the enthusiasm he's seeing from his players as they gear up for the upcoming season.

"Taking the job at the beginning of last year, the challenge coming in I knew that I had to overcome is just to get the kids to work hard," he said. "And they've definitely committed to that.

"This week we've kind of started to harness that energy, effort and focusing on fundamentals. They're learning how to win the game through effort and hard work, but also through solid play."
