PORTAGEVILLE -- Taking over the reigns from legendary coach Jim Bidewell, new Portageville coach Jason Irby is hoping this year's Bulldogs squad can prevent the late season skid that left them teetering above at end of last year at 14-12.
"We have some kids that's (came) out this year that can help us," Irby said. "It's just a process of seeing if we can get them to play together and playing at the level we need to play, but we're pretty optimistic."
After a hot start to the year, Portageville lost several key members of the team down a stretch run that ended with a loss to Neelyville in the semifinals of the Class 2, District 1 Tournament.
"We just didn't have a real experience team by the time districts came around," said Irby. "We were very young, but we have some kids back out this year and the kids that did get to play a lot last year because of that have really improved.
"So that combination together I think is going to be good for us."
Some of last year's squad returning who are expected to contribute this year include Fred Treadwell, Jake Young and Tevin Walker.
Portageville will open the season on Dec. 7 when they host the Kelly Hawks.
