Richland, Bell City pick up wins at Oran Invitational

ORAN -- The Richland Rebels got 30 points from senior standout Ryan Kleffer and advanced to the semifinals of the Oran Invitational with a 58-51 win over Malden on Tuesday night.

Kleffer scored 17 second half points and hit 6-of-8 free throws in the final quarter to help seal the win for the Rebels. For the game, Kleffer was 14-of-18 from the line as Richland was 20-of-30 as a team.

In a consolation semifinal on Tuesday, Bell City used a strong second half to put away Kelly 90-69.

Alan Michael Hess paced Bell City (1-1) with 25 points as the Cubs outscored Kelly 25-10 in the third quarter to put the game away. Kelly (0-2) was led by Trey Drury's 18 points.

Richland will take on Scott Central in the semifinals Thursday at 6:30 p.m. while Malden will take on Greenville at 5 p.m. in the consolation semifinals. Bell City will play again on Friday in the consolation finals at 5 p.m.

Risco 80, Puxico 65

HOLCOMB -- The Risco Tigers advanced to the consolation finals of the Holcomb Invitational with a 80-65 win over Puxico on Tuesday night.

The game was tied 37-37 at halftime, helped by 22 points from Risco's Chris Pavy but Risco began pulling away in the second half as they started to get hot from the field, helped by more defensive pressure.

"We started slow again tonight and didn't shoot it very well early," said Risco coach Brandon Blankenship. "But we turned up our 'D' in the second half. It was a good win for us."

Pavy finished the game with 36 points to lead Risco (1-1) while Luke Bixler had 18. The Tigers will play in the consolation finals at 5:30 p.m. Friday against the winner of Thursday's game between East Prairie and Campbell.

In Monday's other game, Twin Rivers defeated Campbell 71-49 in the final game of the first round. Twin Rivers will take on Bloomfield on Thursday night in a semifinal game while Bernie will face Holcomb in the other semifinal.

SIKESTON -- For the second-straight night the Sikeston Bulldog freshman basketball team played into double overtime, however, Tuesday the Bulldogs found themselves on the losing end to Notre Dame 64-63.

Sikeston held a big 15-2 lead after one but Notre Dame fought their way back to 27-26 at halftime and took a 40-37 lead after three. Sikeston tied the game at the end of regulation but lost in the second overtime.

Jarious Ray led Sikeston (1-1) with 19 points. The Bulldogs will host Poplar Bluff at the Junior High on Thursday.

Sikeston 51, Dexter 22

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Bulldogs routed the visiting Dexter Bearcats 51-22 on Tuesday night to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 16-7 lead after one quarter and led 30-10 at halftime and coasted to the finish.

Sikeston was led in scoring by Zach Jackson's 16 points while Dexter's Drake Mitchell finished with 12.

Sikeston will be back in action on Thursday when they host Poplar Bluff at the Junior High.

Sikeston 45, Dexter 44

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston seventh graders squeaked out a one-point win over visiting Dexter 45-44 on Tuesday night.

Dexter led 25-21 at halftime but Sikeston cut the lead to 33-32 after three and held a 45-42 lead in the closing seconds as the Bearcats put up two 3-pointers in an attempt to tie. The Bearcats missed and put in an offensive rebound as time expired to make the final score 45-44.

Sikeston (1-1) was led in scoring by Dominique Dye who had a game-high 21 points. Ethan Flowers led Dexter with 11.

Sikeston is back in action tonight when they host Poplar Bluff in a 7th grade tournament at the Junior High.
