Behind bars for good

Chief Chris Riggs of the Miner Police Department prepares to be "booked" during the annual MDA lockup Wednesday at the Miner Convention Center. Taking his picture/assisting him is Lori Mascall, a volunteer whose husband receives services from the MDA. For more than 10 years, the MDA has held the fundraiser in the Sikeston area, in which it recruits volunteers from Scott, New Madrid and Mississippi counties to raise bail money, said Kyla Evans, fundraising coordinator. Each person has an $800 goal, and after they are booked, they make phone calls to raise pledges. As an incentive, each "jailbird" was entered into a drawing for prizes for every $50 raised. About 150 people raised just over $13,000 during the event. According to Evans, all of the money raised benefits Southeast Missouri families and helps pay for clinic visits, wheelchair adjustments and repairs, to send children to summer camp and more.
