Kelly loses; Sikeston junior high teams win

CAPE GIRARDEAU --The Sikeston Bulldog wresting team earned two close wins over Cape Central and Carbondale, Ill., on Wednesday night at Cape Central.

Sikeston won a 38-37 decision over host Cape Central and slipped past Carbondale by a score of 36-33. Results from the matches were:

BOYS BASKETBALL

Risco 84, Delta C-7 30

RISCO -- The Risco Tigers raced out to a 32-3 first quarter lead and never looked back, thumping the Delta C-7 Chargers 84-30 on Thursday night.

"We got our pressure working early and our fullcourt (press) caused a lot of turnovers early," said Risco coach Brandon Blankenship.

The pressure continued in the second quarter as the Tigers led 66-11 at halftime and cruised through the second half.

Austin White led Risco (3-2) with 19 points while Chris Pavy added 17. Luke Bixler and Jeremy Fowler added 16 and 15 respectively.

Risco also won in junior varsity action, defeating the Chargers 63-26 to improve to 2-3. Jordan Pavy led all scorers with 23 while Josh Earnheart added 19.

The varsity Tigers will be back in action on Monday when they take on Cooter at 5:30 p.m. in the first round of the Clarkton Holiday Tournament.

BENTON -- The Kelly Hawks were defeated by the visiting Caruthersville Tigers on Thursday night by a final of 74-36.

A 29-3 third quarter in favor of the Tigers put any hopes of Kelly winning their first game since Feb. 13, 2009 against East Prairie in doubt.

Garrett Alsup led the Hawks with 10 points while Sawyer Elfrink added seven.

Caruthersville's Darrell Monroe had a team-high 22 points. Vohland Fonda chipped in 13 and Elbie Fonda scored 11.

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Bulldogs eighth grade basketball team held off the New Madrid County Central Eagles 42-38 on Thursday night to improve to 5-0 on the season.

NMCC led 12-8 after one but Sikeston retook the lead at halftime 20-17 and held on for the win.

The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Zach Jackson's 22 points.

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Bulldogs seventh grade basketball team improved to 5-1 with a 58-20 win on Thursday night.

Sikeston jumped out to an 18-5 lead to open the game and never looked back, leading 35-9 at halftime and 55-16 after three.

Dominique Dyes scored 26 points, including 12 in the first quarter, to lead the Bulldogs while Jaylen Mallory chipped in 10.
