STE. GENEVIEVE - The Sikeston Bulldogs raced out to an early lead and made quick work of the Ste. Genevieve Dragons on Monday, winning 89-44 at Ste. Genevieve High School.
The Dragons are one of three district foes the Bulldogs face this week. Sikeston will also host Perryville tonight and then on Friday Notre Dame will visit the Field House in a critical conference and district clash.
At stake is a favorable seed in the Class 4, District 1 Tournament in February in Dexter.
"We have three district games this week, so we started off on a good note and hopefully we can continue that (tonight) against Perryville," Sikeston coach Gregg Holifield said.
On Monday, Sikeston had no celebration hangover after rolling through the SEMO Conference Tournament for the third straight year last Friday.
The Bulldogs (7-0) jumped on the Dragons quickly, leading 8-0 just a minute into the contest and extending the lead to 31-10 after the first quarter.
Sikeston's pressure continued to cause numerous turnovers in the second quarter before Holifield called off the full-court press not even halfway through the period as the Bulldogs led 56-22 by halftime.
"We built a big lead early," Holifield said. "Our players really came out and played well early offensively and defensively.
Sikeston continued to pour it on in the third quarter, taking an 81-40 lead after three, enforcing the mercy clock for the final period.
Sikeston had 13 different players score in the game with junior forward Eldridge Gibson leading the way with a varsity career-high 17 points. Senior guard Darryl Howard added 14 points and senior swingman Janeil Hatchett added 11 points with six rebounds and four assists.
"Every night it's someone different," Holifield said of his team's balanced scoring. "That's one of the things that makes us a quality team I feel. There are 10 or 11 guys that can get in the scoring column. They play as a team and they share the basketball."
In junior varsity action, Sikeston improved to 7-0 with a 79-21 victory over the Ste. Genevieve jayvee.
Freshman Reese Porter led the charge with 26 points. Markeith Bratcher (12), Audrea Golden (11) and Vashawn Ruffin (10) all had double-figure scoring nights. Freshman J.T. Jones added eight points.
