SIKESTON -- When the Sikeston Bulldogs dictate tempo, it's tough to slow them down.
Their ability to control the pace has kept the Bulldogs undefeated so far this season and it helped them defeat the Perryville Pirates 77-44 on Tuesday night preserving their impressive home winning streak as well which stands at 42 straight games.
"Our players understand we have to play a certain way," Sikeston head coach Gregg Holifield said. "If we can't, we struggle. I thought in the second half we did a much better job."
In the first quarter, the Pirates kept things slow and deliberate. It worked well enough to trade leads back-and-forth with the Bulldogs until, eventually, the first quarter ended in a 16-16 tie.
Ross Moldenhauer paced the Pirates with 8 first quarter points including two 3-pointers.
"They did a really good job of controlling tempo," Holifield said about Perryville. "They're big and they can all pass it and catch it. They did a good job of controlling what they wanted to do in the first half."
Sikeston (8-0), however, broke out in the second quarter. With 24 points, including eight from Will Holifield, the Bulldogs began to play to their style -- putting pressure on the ball handler and causing havoc in the passing lanes.
"We had pressure on the ball and created some turnovers," said Holifield. "We got points off turnovers, which is what we work for."
Sikeston took a 40-28 lead at halftime.
The Bulldogs continued to blanket Perryville in the full court out-scoring them 24-9 in the third quarter. Vashawn Ruffin scored seven points off the bench in the third.
Sikeston was in a comfortable position at the end of the third frame leading 64-37.
The mercy clock began shortly after the fourth quarter started as Sikeston closed out the game holding Perryville to 7 points in the final eight minutes.
Janeil Hatchett had a game-high 15 points and seven rebounds for Sikeston while Holifield added 14 points on four 3-pointers. Darryl Howard chipped in 13 points and had six steals.
This was Sikeston's second of three district opponents this week as the Notre Dame Bulldogs await on Friday in what could be an early advantage in the Class 4, District 1 seedings.
"Tough district game Friday night," Holifield said. "We have a lot of respect for their program and we know they'll come in here ready to play and it will be a very tough game."
