CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Finishing in the middle of the pack against some much larger schools, the Sikeston Bulldogs came away with a strong showing at the Tiger Classic this past weekend.
Finishing 13.5 points behind Rolla, the Bulldogs took seventh-place out of 14 schools after ranking as high as fifth-place on Friday.
"The competition there is outstanding," Sikeston coach Seth Harrell said of the tournament. "For us to compete the way we did I think you have to be very proud of that."
Of the local teams participating, the Bulldogs finished behind Jackson and Ste. Genevieve who took second and fourth respectively, but finished ahead eight-place Cape Central and 10th-place Dexter.
Not sending a full line up to the event, Sikeston got solid results from the ten wrestlers that competed in the event with six of the them coming home with a medal for placing sixth or better.
Among those medaling were Blake Angle who took second-place in the 112-pound division and Darien Boyd who came away with third in the 189-pound division. Three other Bulldogs finished just out of medal in seventh-place.
"That's the ultimate goal," Harrell said of medaling. "Obviously you want to do the best you can and anytime you can leave a tournament with a medal, that's outstanding."
