NEW MADRID -- In May 1970, Ann Evans Copeland walked in to the New Madrid County Recorder's office. That day newly appointed Recorder Doris Hampton hired the New Madrid native as her deputy.
It would be the beginning of a career that would see Copeland work with three more county recorders and eventually move into the job herself.
