Delta tops Oran for third in New Year's Tournament

CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Despite a high-intensity loss to rival Sikeston merely 16 hours earlier, the Charleston Bluejays responded the very next afternoon with a 86-62 victory against McCluer South-Berkeley on Saturday at the 16th Annual Tiger Shootout at Cape Central High School.

Charleston (9-4) broke up a 15-15 first quarter tie by scoring 33 points in the second quarter to take a 48-27 halftime lead to cruise to the easy victory.

Charleston junior Greg Tucker scored a game-high 23 points followed by Jerry Carter's 15 points and Claude Armstrong's 12 points.

Delta New Year's Tournament

DELTA -- The Delta Lady Bobcats ended up taking third in the Delta New Year's girls basketball tournament on Saturday dispatching of the Oran Lady Eagles, 57-23.

The Lady Eagles found themselves down by just four points after the first quarter, 13-9, but Delta exploded for 22 points in the second putting them ahead 35-15 at halftime.

The Lady Bobcats continued to pour it on in the second half, outscoring Oran 19-7 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Delta's Tori Burton outscored the Lady Eagles' team with a game-high 24 points. Machela Van Gennip and Samantha Bartels chipped in 11 points each as well.

Cheyanne King paced Oran with nine points.

Meadow Heights took the Delta New Year's crown with a 65-23 victory over St. Vincent in the final game of the day.

Whitney Welker scored a team-high 21 points for the Lady Panthers in the victory.

The Woodland Lady Cardinals won the consolation championship with a 50-35 win over Saxony Lutheran.
