KIRKWOOD -- Determined to better their fourth place finish last year during Vianney's annual invitational tournament, the Sikeston wrestling team took first place on Saturday in Kirkwood.
"The kids were pretty determined after finishing fourth last year," Sikeston head coach Seth Harrell said. "We knew we had a chance at least competing for that number one spot. It ended up being a pretty good day for us."
Sikeston sent five different wrestlers to the finals in their respective weight classes and 8-of-10 medalled. The top three finishers each received a medal.
Blake Angle and Jacob Stinnett each took home gold medals. Cody Middleton, Clayton Driskill and Kenton Robinson all finished second.
"Overall, we wrestled well," Harrell said. "It was a nice victory since the last couple of weeks we did nothing but practice. As a team we wrestled well."
