DELTA -- The top-seeded Scott City Lady Rams held the Kelly Lady Hawks scoreless in the first quarter on Wednesday night leading to their 44-20 semifinal win in the Scott-Mississippi Conference tournament at Delta High School.
Scott City swarmed the Lady Hawks forcing numerous tipped passes and steals. Junior Katie Hogan altered inside shots in her 6-2 frame as well, making it difficult for Kelly to score that first basket.
Kelly (4-6) didn't help their own cause, however, as they failed to capitalize on point-blank shots when they had the chance.
"You've got to make layups," Kelly head coach Rod McQuerter said. "When you don't make layups and they make layups, it makes it harder on you. Scott City had a lot to do with us missing layups too, so, give them credit.
"They put the ball in the hole, we didn't."
The Lady Rams held a 22-8 lead at halftime and then a 28-12 lead after the third quarter.
"We've been working on defense a lot lately," Scott City head coach Ricky Keller said. "I felt like our girls came out ready to play and we shut them down.
"We changed some of our defenses up and I thought that was a big key as well."
Hogan led her squad with 18 points which included four 3-pointers.
Kelly was led in scoring by Kayla Hicks who scored 10.
Scott City (10-2) will take on the Delta Bobcats in the conference championship game at 8:30 p.m. tonight while Kelly faces the Oran Lady Eagles at 5:30 p.m. in the third-place game.
