Week honors service of school boards

Wednesday, January 26, 2011

SIKESTON -- Few will deny now isn't the most glorious time to serve on a local school board.

With the ever-decreasing funding at the local, state and federal levels, today's school board members are faced with their biggest challenges yet.

"We've got a real tight budget, and the talks are that this budget year will be tighter than the past," Sikeston R-6 School Board President Scott Crumpecker said. "We didn't give out pay raises last year, and that's not popular with folks.

He continued: "Our structures are starting to deteriorate. The climate is not great for a bond. At some point and time, we need to rehabilitate the deteriorating structures."

But these issues aren't unique to the Sikeston district, and challenges for school boards over the next three years are likely to be even greater.
