DELTA -- Having fallen to visiting Scott City twice already this season, the Delta Lady Bobcats had the chance for a little revenge when the Lady Rams came to town Monday evening.

Riding a combined 34 first half points by Samantha Bartels and Machela VanGennip, the Lady Bobcats were able to build a 16-point halftime lead before holding on for a 59-41 win.

"We had lost to them twice this year in the finals of tournaments," Delta head coach Randy White said. "We lost to them by six at the (Lady Devils Invitational) and by 12 in the (Scott-Mississippi) Conference Tournament, so the kids were pumped for this one."

Building a six-point advantage entering the second frame, the Lady Bobcats used their biggest quarter of the evening to push their lead into the double-digits.

After watching Scott City (15-4) pull back to within four on a Katie Hogan basket and ensuing foul shot early in the frame, Delta (12-8) went on a 9-0 run midway through the period to go up 36-22.

It was after the two squads traded shots the next few minutes that Bartels gave her team their biggest advantage yet when she hit two 3-point shots in the final 30 seconds to put Delta up 45-29 entering the break.

"We came out and we were all ready," Bartels said of her teams quick start. "We were all hitting really good (shots)."

Following a pair of Lady Bobcat buckets to push the Lady Rams deficit to 20, Scott City was able to make one last drive, going on a 10-0 run that brought them back to within 11 on a Stacey Heisserer bucket from behind the arc with 2:14 left in the frame.

That was as close as the Lady Rams could close it, however, as they came up empty handed on numerous Delta turnovers the rest of the way.

"They battled their in the third a little bit," Scott City head coach Ricky Keller said. "I thought they came out with a little energy from halftime, but after that the energy level wasn't there."

With a double-digit lead in hand, the Lady Bobcats were able to spend much of the fourth eating up clock as Scott City tried to force the ball away. But with several turnovers on their own end, the Lady Rams' only points in the frame came when Heisserer with hits one last basket with 2:14 left to play.

"We played good defense and played good as a team," Bartels said. "It was one of our best games this year."

Bartels' 24 points on the contest were a game-high, with teammate VanGennip finishing close behind with 22.

"Samantha has really come in to her own this year," said White. "Of course she has been able to start. Her defense had vastly improved and she can knock down the shots when she gets open."

White added that strong guard play was a big difference in his team's recent success, including a 54-49 win over Shawnee, Ill. (17-5) this past weekend.

"Our guards took it to the goal hard (tonight). Tori Burton, especially the last two games, has just taken the ball right at people and that's made a big difference in our overall game."

Leading Scott City, Hogan scored 12 points while contributing five rebounds and two blocks. Heisserer had 11 points, second on the team to go along with three rebounds while Melanie Lacey came away with eight points, 11 rebounds and three steals.
