BENTON -- Holding a slim two-point lead going into the half, the Oran Lady Eagles used a hot third quarter to pull out a 55-42 win over the Kelly Lady Hawks.

"We struggled a little bit in the first half," Lady Eagles' coach Adam Friga said. "We didn't play our best basketball, but what I was proud of was that we still had a two-point lead.

"We knew that if we just kept playing one possession at a time we'd play well and we did. We went on a run, jumped out to a big lead and got them down."

After the two teams played neck-and-neck for most of the first two quarters, Oran's Cheyanne King connected on a basket in the paint early in the third to kick-start what ended up being a 13-0 run by the Lady Eagles to start the quarter.

Scoring her second bucket of the frame, King ended Oran's run when she took an inbound pass from the base line and connected once from the paint to put her team up 35-20 with 2:39 left in the quarter.

"One of our keys subs went out of the game," Lady Hawk's coach Rod McQuerter said. "We got a little short (on the bench), got in foul trouble and the girls got a little tired.

"That's what happens when good teams make run. You have to suck it up and you have to keep playing."

Keeping their hopes alive, Kelly responded by cutting their deficit to 10 by the end of the quarter, followed by Kayla Hicks scoring on the Lady Hawks' opening possession of the fourth to close within eight at 39-31.

Ensuring there wouldn't be a Lady Hawks' comeback, Oran hit six of their last nine free throws in the final minutes to secure the win.

Leading Oran's (13-12) effort, King finished with a game-high 21 points, followed by Chrissy Sauceda and Addie Kielhofner who had 11 points apiece.

For Kelly (10-13), Kayla Hicks put up 16 points while Kristen Powell finished with nine.

"I'm very proud of the girls effort," McQuerter said. "They had a great regular season, but now it's time to get ready for districts. Like I told the girls, it's water under the bridge.

"We have a big game Saturday and we have to come ready to play."
