ORAN -- Fighting back to within three points after trailing by double-digits early in the fourth quarter, Chaffee saw its comeback bid fall short Tuesday as Advance held on for a 61-53 win in the Class 2, District 3 semifinals.

"I thought we played extremely hard," Josh Govreau said. "I told them before the game for us to have a chance to win we had to play every possession like it was the last. For the most part I felt like we did that."

The Red Devils looked to take a four-point advantage into the half after a 6-0 run in the final one-and-a-half minutes of the second quarter to put Chaffee up 30-26. Hitting two-straight buckets in the final 27 seconds, however, Advance came back to tie on a Grant Gray basket with seven seconds left in the frame.

Advance went up by as much as 10 points in the fourth quarter.

From then on, Chaffee (15-13) spent the remainder of the game chasing the Hornets, cutting their deficit to three with 1:08 remaining when Zach Dannenmueller dropped in a basket to make it 56-53.

Unfortunately for the Red Devils, Advance hit a free throw on their next trip down the court to go by four, making it once again a two possession game with 1:04 to play.

Chaffee failed to come any closer missing their next two shots. A turnover during their following possession allowed the Hornets to safely pull ahead, 60-53, with 30 seconds remaining.

"For the game we just never consistently shot the ball well from outside," Govreau said. "We got some putbacks and other things like that that really helped us. But (Advance) is a good team and for us to be able to beat them we were going to have to hit on all cylinders. We almost pulled it off."

Finishing the night with three players scoring in the double figures, the Red Devils were led by Michael Rutherford, who finished with 15 points. Jordan Yahn and Dannenmueller added 12 and 10 points to Chaffee's cause.

For Advance, Darren VanGennip had a game-high 20 points while teammate Gray was close behind with 19.
