Receive scores, weather, community updates and more with the Standard Democrat's new text alert system.
SIKESTON -- The Standard Democrat is offering a new service to the community, and all people need is a cell phone to take advantage of it.

"We are excited to announce an addition to our local coverage of the area through free text and email alerts," said Don Culbertson, chief operating officer. "These alerts will add another layer to our coverage and will include breaking news, community events, daily weather updates, severe weather announcements, school closings and announcements, local sports scores and more all sent directly to you via email or text."

Signup is done by a form, linked from the website www.standard-democrat.com -- just click on the ad in the right column.

Culbertson noted that TextCasting is an opt-in system, meaning subscribers only get the texts or emails they sign up for in the categories they choose -- which can be changed at any time. There is no spam, either.

"We have also established a quiet time, 10:30 p.m. to 7 a.m., in which we will not send out any text or email messages at all," said Culbertson. "The only texts or emails allowed to break this quiet time are severe weather warnings from the National Weather Service and school closings."

The Standard Democrat is also on Facebook. There, links are posted for content and upcoming events, as well as pictures from the community.
