Four SHS seniors to play as well as SCC's Otto Porter

DEXTER -- The 10th Annual BA All-Star Extravaganza has released this year's players and teams with several local athletes scheduled to take part.

The Extravaganza will be held on April 2 in the Bearcat Event Center in Dexter, highlighting high school seniors in volleyball and basketball. The all-star volleyball game will kick things off at 9 a.m., followed by the Class 1&2 boys basketball game, girls basketball game and Class 3, 4 & 5 boys basketball game. Also included throughout the day are skills competitions and the popular 3-point shootout and slam dunk competition sponsored by the Bank of Advance.

"We're really excited," said Traci Christian of BA Promotions and Marketing. "This is our second year moving it over to Dexter. We have a lot of seniors coming that are notable like Otto Porter. And some of the others Alan Flannigan and Jacob Tolbert. The whole thing is going to be great this year. We have a lot of talent."

The event spent many years being played at Poplar Bluff where it held over two days, however, last year the Extravaganza was condensed to one day and moved to the new Bearcat Event Center in Dexter.

"It makes it a lot better because we have athletes that have made the team that are all the way from up in Ste. Genevieve down to Cooter and then as far west over like toward Doniphan and Poplar Bluff," Christian said of moving the event to Dexter. "It makes it a little bit easier, accessible."

The event has grown in the last 10 years and this year's Extravaganza could draw a large crowd in part to the local talent and their following. Included in that are Sikeston seniors Corey Porter, Will Holifield, Janeil Hatchett and Darryl Howard as well as Scott County Central's Porter and Dexter's Flannigan.

"You never know how your crowd is going to be because it's always based on the following of those seniors," Christian said. "Especially like this year with Sikeston going to state and us having four of their seniors on the all-star teams. It varies because it could be an even larger group this year because of everybody being so excited.

"The hottest thing is the slam dunk contest. That's when we're probably at our fullest capacity."

Players were nominated by coaches and athletic directors from 65 area schools. Nominations are then compiled, resent to the coaches and athletic directors for a vote with the top 24 taken in that particular sport. Coaches and ADs also vote on coach of the year, player of the year, defensive player of the year, best athletic director and school with the best spirit.

Once the top 24 players are nominated in each sport, the elected coaches for each team then take part in a draft.

"They actually do like a regular draft," Christian said. "In 30 seconds a team of three coaches gets to pick and then it slips over to the other and swaps over to the other and they have 30 second to pick their player. And they go back and forth."

Following the day's games and activities, the Extravaganza will close with the awards presentation also taking place at the Bearcat Event Center. Players, coaches and area schools will be recognized at the event and will feature guest speaker Dexter native, Scott Kruse, who is an educator and founder of the 18 Fore Life Foundation.
