It has now become an unofficial rite of spring in Sikeston - the annual Kenny Rogers Children's Center Telethon. This very special event unfolds Saturday and Sunday at the Sikeston High School Field House.

If you've attended a Telethon in the past, you know the flurry of activity that surrounds this two-day fundraiser. There is literally something for just about everyone.

The televised portion of the Telethon spotlights area talent performing on the center stage. But in the background at the Field House, there are countless other activities to entertain and provide a wonderful weekend for the entire family.

As always, it's the kids at the Center who are the stars of the Telethon itself. These brave young kids face daily obstacles - all made easier by the skilled workers at the Center. When their struggles are highlighted, you begin to fully appreciate the importance of the Center to our community and region.

The Telethon has an ambitious goal this year to exceed the $500,000 raised last year. If you actually think about it, to raise that amount of money in such a brief timeframe in our small community is a tribute to the volunteers and the reputation of the Center.

And speaking of volunteers, it's also important to note the hundreds if not thousands of people who volunteer their time to raise money and handle the details of this massive undertaking. Their efforts should never go unnoticed.

All in all, this Telethon has the promise to be one of the most productive and entertaining in recent memory. The enthusiasm that is generated during this two-day event is virtually unmatched in our area.

And if you take the time to drop by the Field House, you'll see firsthand just how contagious this enthusiasm can become.

There is no better cause than the Telethon. Expenses for the Telethon are extremely small compared to the donations received. And all of those funds go directly back to the Center to help provide the services to this precious children.

Be proud Sikeston. It's Telethon Weekend!
