CHAFFEE -- Getting seven innings of no-hit ball from Andrew Dooley and Alex Davie, the Chaffee Red Devils opened their season with a 7-0 win over the visiting Risco Tigers on Friday afternoon.

"We came out, our pitchers threw the ball extremely well and I was pleased to see our defense make plays behind them," Chaffee coach Brian Horrell said. "I think we had (five) walks on the day. That's something we try to talk about. We can't help you if you're walking people.

"Seemed like a few of their walks got down to second base and in high school a lot of times that will lead to some runs, but our pitchers for the most part through all right."

After two hitless innings against Risco starter Jordon Pavy, the Red Devils got their offense going in third inning.

Starting with leadoff hitter Cody Payne reaching on a double to left, six consecutive Chaffee batters reached and scored in four hit, two walk frame that featured three doubles.

"We brought it all together," Davie said. "The first time around we got a look at him and the second time we found it."

Adding one more insurance run in the fifth, Davie opened the inning with a double to left before coming home from third on an error by the catcher.

Starting for the Red Devils and going four full innings, Dooley picked up the win, allowing three walks, no hits while striking out four.

Closing out the game, Davie went the final three innings giving up two walks and no hits while striking out the first three batters he saw.

Taking the loss, Pavy pitched two hitless innings before coming out in third after allowing four straight Red Devils to reach base. He allowed four runs on three hits and struck out one.

"The pitcher I had out there to start is a freshman," Risco coach Brandon Blankenship said of Pavy. "I might have stayed with him too long. We knew coming in we wanted to use three pitchers today. Jordon had a good first two innings so we though maybe we could get him through the third inning, but that was their second time through the lineup."

With so many new faces in the lineup after graduating six seniors last year, including their entire infield, Blankenship added he was pleased with his young groups performance.

"It was a good first game for us," he said. "We've actually only gotten in three practices because of weather and (basketball season).

"I thought our pitchers threw strikes for the most part. Hitting is always kind of the last thing that seems to come around and with us not having very practices I have to feel pretty good about it."
