CHARLESTON -- Capping a big offensive performance with a 12 run fourth, the Portageville Lady Bulldogs cruised to a 21-1 win Monday over the Charleston Lady Bluejays.
With 19 hits on the contest, Portageville got things rolling in the second inning when the Lady Bulldogs scored seven runs in the frame. Batting around the order in the frame, Capping the rally, Portageville's Brooke Johnson hit a two run home run to put her team up 7-0.
Following a two-run third, the Lady Bulldogs made sure the mercy rule would stay in effect when they batted around the order twice in the fourth, putting up 10 hits in the frame.
"Amazing," Portageville coach Candice Harper said of her team's offensive performance. "We played on Friday against a team with a slower pitcher so I was concerned about how we would hit, but we hit remarkably well."
Just three days after throwing a no-hitter in her team's season opener, Lady Bulldog's starting pitcher Jenna Hawkins breezed through three perfect innings on the mound before giving up her only hit of the game to start the fourth.
"She has impressive composure for a sophomore," Harper said of Hawkins.
"The important thing is the win and she knows that. She's all about the win."
Looking to break up the shutout, Charleston's leadoff hitter Stacia Manning hit a blooper to shallow right that dropped just inside the foul line for a base hit.
After advancing to third, Manning came in to score on a passed ball for the Lady Bluejays lone run.
With the Portageville improves to 2-0 while Charleston falls to 0-1 on the young season.
