LONE OAK, Ky. -- Over the past two seasons, the Sikeston Bulldogs baseball team has faired well at the Reidland Invitational tournament in Reidland, Ky.
They continued their solid play on Saturday defeating both Herrin, Ill., and Marshall County, Ky., with help from the long ball at Lone Oak High School.
"We like to go over there and play," Sikeston coach Kevin Self said. "It's good to see other teams for different states that are top quality programs."
In their first game on Saturday, Sikeston (4-1) defeated Herrin 6-1 with two dingers being the difference.
Both Tyler Anderson and Luke Keefer connected for home runs to give Sikeston a commanding lead. Anderson hit a two-run shot in the third inning to go ahead by one run which was followed by a three-run jack by Keefer in the fourth.
Keefer led Sikeston with two hits and three RBI.
The Bulldogs added their last run in the sixth inning on a bases loaded walk.
Cord Sheehy picked up the win on the mound in six innings of work. Sheehy struck out six batters and walked one. He allowed just three hits after a rocky first inning that saw a Herrin run cross on single.
Sikeston's bats continued to pound away in their second game against Marshall County.
The Bulldogs peppered 14 hits in just five innings as they run-ruled Marshall County 11-0.
Anderson hit two home runs and collected five RBI while Drew Harper also got into one for the Bulldogs' sixth home run in two days.
Anderson sparked the Bulldogs with his first round-tripper of the game in the first inning to go up 1-0. Sikeston scored three more runs in the third inning which included an infield single by Anderson and a two-run home run by Harper. Anderson would end up 3 for 4 with five RBI while Harper went 2 for 2. Nathan Rodgers also added two hits as well.
The Bulldogs exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning that would eventually end the game.
Harper knock a leadoff solo shot to start the fifth, a two-run double by Evan Underwood made it 7-1, Sheehy hit an RBI double and Anderson capped off the big inning with a two-out three-run home run to give Sikeston it's final tally.
Trent McMillan earned the win for Sikeston allowing no hits in four innings but did walk six. Ross Bohannon pitched the last inning giving up one hit.
"We played on nice fields and I think that got the kids excited to play," Self said. "We played under the lights one night and I know they liked that. It's just a good opportunity for us."
In the last two years, the Bulldogs have went 6-1 in the Reidland tournament.
