CHARLESTON -- Although basketball season is over, many fans would still like to see their hometown team compete on the court.
The 1st Annual Charleston Hardwood Classic will enable fans to do just that.
The Hardwood Classic is a basketball tournament showcasing talent from Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana and St. Louis as well as local talent from the surrounding area.
Members from Sikeston, Charleston, Scott County Central, Cape Central, Poplar Bluff and Caruthersville to name a few are expected to participate.
"I'm expecting some really good basketball," tournament director Lester Gillespie said. "I kind of look at it as a sneak peek at all the teams for next year. We'll see who will have a target on their back come next season."
Some out of state teams will include Dyer County, Tenn., Haywood, Tenn. and Carbondale, Ill.
Ages for the tournament range from fourth grade to 12th grade and varsity level girls. Trophies and medals will be given for first, second and third place finishes in each grade level.
Gillespie, who is the youth director at the Susanna Wesley Family Learning Center in Charleston, says all proceeds from the Classic will be for the Susanna Wesley Family Learning Center.
The Classic will take place at the Bowden Center at the Charleston Middle School on April 16-17.
