Bobby Smith, right, a former Louisiana State Trooper who was blinded in the line of duty, was one of the speakers at a law enforcement class attended by some 60 area officers from area police and sheriff's departments as well as the Missouri Highway Patrol on Wednesday in Sikeston. Smith, who has earned a Ph.D. in counseling psychology, spoke with the officers about the despair and depression he went through after being shot in the face. He urged the officers to be aware of the importance of seeking assistance from those in the mental health fields when having to deal with the stress of their jobs as well as making themselves available to fellow officers who need someone to listen to them. An afternoon session was conducted for those attending the meeting on prescription drug abuse.
