Sunday, May 1, 2011

FARMINGTON -- The Sikeston golf team finished second in the Class 3, District 1 tournament on Friday at Crowne Point golf course in Farmington.

The Bulldogs ended with a team score of 338.

Under the new playoff structure, Sikeston will move on to the Sectional round.

"It was an awesome day, weather-wise, and the course was in a lot better condition that I thought it would be," Sikeston golf coach Andy McGill said. "We're very excited that as a team we have a chance to advance."

Evan Deere paced Sikeston with an individual score of 80, which was good enough for a tie for third overall. Conner Landers shot an 82 (sixth place), Kirk Hoggat ended with an 86 (11th place), Conor MacGillivray shot a 90 (15th place) while Ben Murray finished with a 92.

Notre Dame finished first as a team with a 318. Dexter took third with a 347, Farmington was fourth with a 355.

Clarkton 3, Risco 2

CLARKTON -- Falling behind by three runs early, the fourth-seeded Risco Tigers saw top-seeded Cooter advance to the Tri-County Conference Tournament championship game Friday afternoon with a 3-2 win.

Down 3-0 after three innings, Risco made things interesting in the fifth when Zach Brannon hit a two-run home run to cut the Wildcats' lead to one.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, the tying run would never come as Risco batters only mustered four hits on the night. Accounting for all those hits, Brannon and Jordon Pavy had two hits apiece, including a double by Pavy and Brannon's above mentioned home run.

For Cooter, Patrick Ward and Jesse Rayburn each had two hits with Ward contributing a home run with two runs batted in on the contest.

Playing in the championship game later Friday afternoon, Cooter claimed the title with a 5-3 win over Holcomb.
