Flood gauges at Cape; Cairo, Ill.; and Paducah, Ky., lower

NEW MADRID -- At 2:39 p.m. Thursday, explosives set by the Corps of Engineers opened the third and final crevasse of the Birds Point-New Madrid Floodway.

By 4 p.m. officials were looking at the next steps in the battle with rising flood waters on the Mississippi River.
