R-6 board briefed on graduation festivities

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

SIKESTON -- With the graduation of Sikeston High School's class of 2011 two weeks away, school officials are already preparing for the seniors' big night.

High School Principal Tom Williams briefed the Sikeston R-6 Board of Education on graduation procedures during its monthly meeting Tuesday. Graduation is set for 7 p.m. May 26 at the Field House with doors opening at 6 p.m. Students will receive 10 tickets -- four for floor seats and six for bleacher seats, he said.

"It's been set up with DPS for securing the building prior to graduation time. Supervision has been set for that evening," Williams said.

Student speakers, which were named Monday during the Honors Assembly, will be Ben Priday and Kelsey Dacus. Introducing Williams will be Sam Polivick. Sarah Hopson will introduce Superintendent Steve Borgsmiller and Hannah Uthoff will introduce Board President Scott Crumpecker.

Andy Comstock, assistant superintendent of middle grades and professional development, noted May 27 is the last day of school with early dismissal at 11:20 a.m. for Fifth and Sixth Grade Center; 11:40 a.m. at Junior High; noon at all elementary schools; and 12:15 p.m. at the Kindergarten Center.

In other business, the board granted permission to transfer money from the general fund to the capital fund as permitted by a statute for all Missouri schools. This allows the district to transfer from its general operating fund to the capital fund up to a 7 percent maximum allowed by the statute, which for the Sikeston R-6 district, averages around $1.5 million, according to R-6 Business Director Lori Boardman
