Peterson to be guest speaker at ceremony

SIKESTON -- Sikeston and area residents can observe Memorial Day with a service beginning at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sikeston Veterans Park. Guest speaker will be 1st Lt. Alec Petersen of Charleston who is now on active duty with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky.

Members of the local VFW and American Legion will also participate in the service. Harold Myrick will perform the National Anthem and the Rev. Rick Lovall, pastor of the United Pentecostal Church, will offer the Prayer of Remembrance.

The wreath will be presented by retired U.S. Navy Lt. Lanie G. Black III and the Sikeston National Guard will perform the 21-gun salute.

Petersen completed a combat deployment with the 101st in Afghanistan this past February. He was positioned along the rugged mountain range region on the Afghan-Pakistan border at remote forward operating bases. His responsibilities included intelligence collection, force protection and target acquisition for an infantry force of over 800 American combat troops.

His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the NATO ISAF Medal and the Army Achievement Medal along with earning the Combat Action Badge, the Army Parachutist Badge and the Air Assault Badge.
