SIKESTON -- Local libraries plan to take young readers on a trip around the world this summer through their various reading programs.

"One World, Many Stories" is this year's theme at libraries in Scott, New Madrid and Mississippi counties.

"They can go on vacations in their own little world and drop into someone else's world," said Ann Thompson, children's librarian at Sikeston Public Library.

Participants in Sikeston's preschool through fifth grade summer reading program will journey through Italy, Mexico, Australia, Africa and China.

"We've got a lot of good things planned. We're the only absolutely free summer program in Sikeston," said Thompson, who begins preparing for summer reading programs in October.

In addition to offering the program to the public, Thompson also noted the library received a summer reading grant for $7,600 to hire two staff members to help implement the program to the YMCA's Summer Day Camp and Lincoln Lincoln University Summer Enrichment Camp.
