Scott County Central Elementary students participate in the first day of their summer school's Olympic Games. Since school began May 25, students have been learning about the Olympics and making artwork in preparation for this week's Olympic games. While some districts continue to offer summer school, many others have opted not to offer the program due to budget constraints.

SIKESTON -- Faced with tighter budgets, some local school districts still decided to provide their usual summer school programs this year while others opted not to offer the program for the first time in years.

"We really thought that we weren't going to get any (financial) help from the state and so we weren't going to be able to afford to put summer school on," Scott County Central Elementary Principal Stacey Russell said.
