SIKESTON -- For kids who are interested in basketball and want to improve their game, the YMCA of Sikeston will have state championship caliber instructors on hand to do so.
Sikeston basketball head coach Gregg Holifield and members of the 2011 state champion Bulldogs are going to help tutor kids in the ways of basketball.
"We think there's a lot of interest within the community, which has gave so much to us," Holifield said. "Hopefully, we can get some younger kids going and get them playing as much as possible."
The camp is for boys ages 8-14 and will run June 20-24.
Along with Holifield, members of his staff and team will be on location as instructors.
"Coach Holifield is going to get to know these kids at a younger age, instill some of his wisdom and maybe the kids can get accustomed to the winning ways that we're getting accustomed to," Senior Program Director of the YMCA, Chris Hodgkiss said.
Those who sign up can expect to work on the same drills performed by the 30-0 Bulldogs. Holifield said they will work on shooting drills as well as many others. They will also scrimmage too.
"We'll do some drill work, we'll shoot as much as we can and put them in a position to play some," he said. "Hopefully, we'll have a little fun doing it too.
"We're trying to get some of the younger kids involved, plus it gives our kids an opportunity to give back."
Camp will begin at 9 a.m. and go until 10:30 a.m. for boys 8-10. Boys 11-14 years of age will start at 11 a.m. and will practice until 12:30 p.m.
"When they see there's going to be some of these kids from last year's team, they know who they are and they'll be excited," Hodgkiss said. "They realize what those players did and they're going to want to be a part of that -- who wouldn't want to be a part of that?"
Registration for the camp has begun and will run through June 13. Each camp member will receive a T-shirt. Cost for the camp is $30 for YMCA members and $40 for non members. The YMCA will not turn anyone away because of an inability to pay. If financial assistance is needed for the camp, contact the YMCA front desk at 472-9622.
