Agriculture officials are estimating the potential crop value lost when the Birds Point New Madrid levee was blown at $85.2 million. However the figure doesn't include the losses to farm and public infrastructures and the damage from seepage or backwater flooding. New Madrid County lost at least two bridges to the May flooding.

MU estimates floodway crop loss at $85M

COLUMBIA -- Potential crop value lost when the Birds Point levee was blown in southeast Missouri totaled $85.2 million, according to a report by the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute.

The Army Corps of Engineers opened a 133,000-acre floodway between Birds Point, and New Madrid to relieve flooding at the junction of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers at Cairo, Ill., on May 2.
