Sikeston gymnasts heading to nationals

Wednesday, June 22, 2011

SIKESTON -- Sikeston Gymnastics will be sending two of its gymnasts to compete at Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando Florida July 1-3 for a National Gymnastics Competition.

Sixteen-year-old Alexis Arthur and 12-year-old Mandalynn Wells have been training hard for this meet and their coach, Megan Massey, wishes them good luck.

This will be Alexis'sixth trip to Nationals, but Manna will get to experience the competition for the first time this year. Mandalynn "Manna" Wells, a level 3 gymnast, has scored in the 8's and 9's in nearly every competition this season.

"Even though her scores have been high throughout the season, we've continued to work hard this summer to tweak even the smallest movement to ensure the best scores at Nationals next week," said Massey.

Each of the two girls will be competing in four events at next week's meet: floor exercise, uneven bars, vault, and balance beam. Then their scores will be combined for all-around trophy and medal places.

"They're ready," said Massey. "They may be a bit nervous, but they're well prepared and I know they'll do their best."
