CHARLESTON -- Mississippi County commissioners are concerned about the rising river levels that threaten to send water back into the floodway.

During the Mississippi County Commission meeting, Presiding Commissioner Carlin Bennett and Commissioner Robert Jackson discussed how the Mississippi River, if it crests as expected, will send water back through breaches that remain open in the frontline levee.

According to the commissioners, a ring levee was built around the northern inflow/outflow crevasse of the Bird's Point levee near Big Oak State Park. However, the southern crevasse is still open as well as the main inflow breach at Birds Point.
