SIKESTON -- Area residents have only until the end of next week to register for disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
"The most important thing to know is if you had any damage at all between April 19 and June 6, you should register with FEMA for possible assistance because time is running out," said John Mills, external affairs field specialist with FEMA. "The deadline is this Friday: July 29."
Mills recommended calling FEMA toll free at 1-800-621-3362 to register for anyone who had damage and encouraging others to do so as well.
"If you know someone who had damage, please make sure you friends and family members are aware of the July 29 deadline and give them the phone number," he said. "For people on a fixed income who have flood damage, a few hundred dollars or a few thousand dollars in assistance could mean a lot to them."
Those who call the number "will be talking to real people on the other end of the phone," Mills said.
Or, for those who prefer, registration can also be completed online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov.
