SIKESTON -- Starting on Thursday, the Sikeston All Stars will set their sights on another championship as they host the 2011 Cal Ripken 11U Midwest Plains Regional Tournament.

"The core of our team here has been together since they were six year olds," Sikeston team manager Stacy Pratt said. "We've won two state championships as well as two regional championships.

"We fell a little short last week in Farmington at the state championship, but we're playing on our home field and we're looking forward to defending our regional title."

Coming off their World Series appearance last year in the 10U division, Sikeston will be up against nine other teams from North Dakota, Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota and Canada.

The combined 10 teams will be split into two five teams divisions, American and National, where five days of pool play will determine who advances into the championship tournament.

The top three teams will advance with the winner of both division brackets playing on Thursday, Aug. 4, for the title.

Though the tournament starts on Thursday at 7 p.m. with the opening ceremony and skills competition, actual games won't take place until Friday. Without a game on Friday, Sikeston will open up their four games of pool play on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against another local team from Scott County.

Then on Sunday at 5 p.m. Sikeston will play Minnesota, followed on Monday with a game against Kansas. Rounding out pool play, Sikeston will then play Canada on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

Pratt said opening up against Scott County should be a good matchup since the two teams have some history.

"We've actually played them in the last two tournaments and we're about even up with them," Pratt said. "We beat them at Dexter in a wood bat tournament and then we fell a little short and lost to them Saturday evening at the state tournament.

"So it should be a battle."
