PORTAGEVILLE -- Going on a pair of scoring runs in the final minutes of the first half to take their first lead of the game, the Chaffee Red Devils went on to pull away from the Portageville Bulldogs for a 47-30 win on Friday.

"We didn't come out like we should have," Chaffee quarterback Jordan Yahn said. "It felt like we were going slow at first and then moving into the second quarter it felt like we started taking it to them and coming back."

Trailing 14-13 with 6:45 left in the second quarter, the Red Devils opened up a drive at their own 11 yard line before quickly going three-and-out. Punting on fourth down, Chaffee then caught a huge break when Portageville fumbled the return, giving Chaffee the ball on their own 45 yard line.

With new life, Yahn connected with Charlie Montgomery for a 38-yard pass before Tyson Estes ran the ball to the nine-yard line. After another couple of Estes runs that left the ball on the three, Yahn took the ball up the middle on a quarterback keeper to put the Red Devils up 19-13 with 1:58 left in the half.

Late in Portageville's subsequent drive, another costly Bulldogs turnover found the Red Devils back in scoring position.

With under 30 seconds before the half and near their own 35 yard line, Portageville's quarterback went back to pass before losing the ball in the pocket. Chaffee defensive lineman DJ White recovered and hustled to the 15-yard line before being tackled. On the first play of Chaffee's possession, Yahn caught Montgomery in the right corner of the end zone to put the Red Devils up 25-14 with only eight seconds remaining.

"I thought that was probably the one that hurt us the most because we had just made a great stop," Portageville coach Ronnie Jones said. "I felt like if we got a return there (on the punt) and gotten the ball into the end zone before half it would have been a better ball game for us."

Continuing to pull away, Chaffee came out in the second half and, after stalling on their first drive, marched 78 yards down the field before Estes found the end zone of a three-yard run with 6:14 left in the quarter.

On the first possession of Chaffee's next drive, Estes once again found pay dirt, taking the ball of the left sideline 71 yards to put his team ahead 40-14.

It was early in the fourth that the Red Devils effectively sealed the game as the Bulldogs tried to punt inside their own 20.

Portageville's punter couldn't control the snap, launching a kick that sailed only a few yards before hitting a Red Devils when he finally gained possession.

Getting in on the action once again, White scooped up the loose ball and ran 13 yards for the score, putting Chaffee up 47-14 with 11:51 to play.

"They scored those two early on us and then I thought we played well," Red Devil's coach Charlie Vickery said of his team. "The touchdown right before half gave us a little of breathing room.

"That really helped us out and then coming ouat in the second half and getting those quick scores we were able to get after them pretty good."

Portageville went on to score twice in the final half to close the difference as Bryce Wallace found Jansen Darst for a five-yard touchdown pass at the 10:06 mark in the fourth quarter, followed by Ben Story catching a 13-yard touchdown pass with 1:23 left in the game.

In catching the final touchdown, Story bookended Portageville's effort, scoring on a nine-yard pass on the Bulldog's opening drive as they went up 6-0.

Chaffee then responded with a score on its opening drive before Daniel Allen put Portageville ahead on a 14-7 with a two-yard run at the 2:05 mark in the first quarter.

"A lot of time was spent with our younger kids playing and I thought they played well at times," Jones said. "We had five starters that played last week, but not this week for different reasons. Hopefully we'll have those guys back. Until we get that lined out it's going to be tough for now.

"But you can't fault the effort of the kids we had out there. I thought they played well and played to the last bell."
