CAPE GIRARDEAU -- The Sikeston Bulldogs soccer team defeated Murray, Ky., 3-0 in the consolation bracket during the Notre Dame Soccerfest on Friday.
After controlling the ball and tempo throughout the first half, the Bulldogs finally broke through in the second.
Freshman Tyler McClinton put Sikeston on top with a goal in the 42nd minute with an assist from Chase Baron.
Quentin Hyde gave Sikeston a 2-0 lead with his first goal of his four-year soccer career. Hunter Williams was credited with the assist.
Williams scored his first goal of the year on Baron's second assist to give Sikeston their 3-0 cushion.
"We controlled possession for pretty much all of the first half," Sikeston coach Doyle Noe said. "When you dominate possession like we did, good things are going to happen.
"Our defense really stepped up too. We smothered almost everything Murray had."
Sikeston moved into the consolation championship game on Saturday. Results from their contest will be in the Tuesday edition of the Standard Democrat.
